A Natural Eye: Our Urban Parks

Chicago's Millennium Park
June 29 - July 1, 2012
with Eddie Soloway

I am taking "A Natural Eye" on the road to our urban parks, and our summer stop is Chicago’s Millennium Park. It is hard to believe the diversity inside these twenty-four acres nestled next to The Art Institute of Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan. Created in 2004, the Park beckons to be photographed. You will be mesmerized by the elliptical Cloud Gate sculpture, 110 tons of polished stainless steel. You will find tranquil moments in the native prairie plants and roses. And you will photograph happily in the parade of visitors, reflecting pools, and the towering skyscape of contemporary architecture.

Surround yourself in Chicago’s celebration of summer while immersing your photography in new directions. The weekend starts Friday evening and finishes late Sunday afternoon. I will weave together many of the elements of my Santa Fe-based “Natural Eye” workshop, including eye-opening outdoor experiences, fine-tuning technical lessons, and for those people prepared for the digital workflow, there will be a chance to review work made during the workshop. This weekend's sessions strive to develop your eye first, and then bring the technical skills of photography to it.

Columbia College has arranged to host my presentation on Friday night from 7:30-9:00pm. Sponsored by both Calumet Photographic and The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, I will be presenting "Memories, Moons, and Imagination", an inspirational session designed to set the tone for our weekend. It will be held at Ferguson Memorial Theater, Columbia College, 600 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605. The weekend sessions will be held at Calumet Photographic's classroom in their store located on the near north side, 1111 N. Cherry Avenue, Chicago 60642. On Saturday we will meet at Calumet at 9am. In the afternoon we will carpool to Millennium Park, about four miles away. Instruction will end at 4pm. Sunday's sessions will go from 9am to 4pm.

WORKSHOP FEE: $645.00. Lodging, transportation, and meals are not included.

PREREQUISITE: This workshop is open to all photographers with a working knowledge of their cameras. On Sunday there will be two chances to review images made during the workshop. The first will be a look at images made Saturday, and the second will be a look at the results of a creative exercise on Sunday. If you wish to participate in these reviews you will need to bring a laptop, editing software, card reader, jump drive, and above all, a working knowledge of the digital workflow. This would include the ability to download your images to your laptop on Saturday night, make selections, re-name and re-size the selections, move them to a folder, and put them on a jump drive to move to the class laptop for projection. Sunday's creative session will require you to bring your laptop to the classroom. There will be no digital workflow instruction during the workshop. For those participants choosing to pass on the image review, a lot will be gained from listening to the feedback given to others.

To hold a place in the workshop, 1.) Send me an e-mail and request that I hold a space for you in the workshop and that I send you a registration form. 2.) The registration form will be sent via e-mail, and your space will be held for one week while waiting for your registration form to arrive in the mail or by e-mail.

PAYMENT: A $100.00 nonrefundable deposit will hold your reservation and may be made by check, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Final payment is due May 3.

CONFIRMATION DATE: You will receive an e-mail notice by April 30 giving the workshop a final confirmation that it will run.

CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event you must cancel your participation, fees will be returned as follows: If notification is received before May 3, all fees less the $100.00 nonrefundable deposit will be returned. If notification is received after May 3, no money will be returned. I strongly suggest that participants take out travel insurance to protect themselves against unseen circumstances that may arise. In the event that I have to cancel the workshop for any reason, all fees will be returned or you may choose to receive credit towards a future session.

Upon workshop confirmation you will be sent information which will include a letter with directions, and recommendations about what to bring. You will also receive a request form that will gather information about any medical concerns and emergency contacts.
